Equivalent Point-Source Ground-Motion Model for Subduction Earthquakes in Japan

Behzad Hassani et al.

Summary: The study uses an equivalent point-source ground-motion model to characterize subduction earthquakes in Japan, with parameterized attenuation attributes for different event types and regions. The developed GMMs are applicable for interface events of M 4.5-9.2 and in-slab earthquakes of M 4-8.5, for rupture distances from 10 to 600 km and for 100 m/s < V-S30 < 1500 m/s.

Detailed space-time variations of the seismic response of the shallow crust to small earthquakes from analysis of dense array data

Luis Fabian Bonilla et al.

Summary: This study calculates high-resolution space-time variations of subsurface seismic properties from autocorrelation functions of noise and local earthquakes, showing that apparent velocity changes are frequency-dependent with strong spatial variability. Results indicate larger changes and shorter recovery times at higher frequencies, which have important implications for understanding nonlinear responses of subsurface materials during common earthquake shaking.

Epistemic Uncertainty in Site Response as Derived from One-Dimensional Ground Response Analyses

Jonathan P. Stewart et al.

Summary: This study extends the uncertainty framework to consider modeling errors and quantifies the epistemic uncertainty using vertical array data. Results from analysis of California and Japan data sets show similar conclusions. The dispersion observed is only slightly smaller than site-to-site variability from ergodic models for active tectonic regions, limiting the apparent benefits of site-specific GRAs.

Near-surface softening and healing in eastern Honshu associated with the 2011 magnitude-9 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake

Su-Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The near-surface part of the Earth's crust, where human activities take place, is of great importance to engineers in infrastructure construction. Reduction in the stiffness of near-surface geomaterials plays a crucial role in triggering geohazards, but the physical mechanism behind material softening is not fully understood. The study reports a coseismic shear-wave velocity reduction in the near surface during a major earthquake event, followed by a two-stage healing process that includes rapid recovery within minutes and slow recovery over many years. A theoretical contact model between mineral grains in geomaterials is proposed to explain the different stages in the healing process.
