Soft stimulation treatment of geothermal well RV-43 to meet the growing heat demand of Reykjavik

Hannes Hofmann et al.

Summary: Reykjavik is heated by geothermal energy, but recent city growth increased heat demand. Soft stimulation concepts were developed to improve geothermal well performance, with successful demonstration in a hydraulic soft stimulation project in 2019.

Real-time determination of earthquake focal mechanism via deep learning

Wenhuan Kuang et al.

Summary: The authors propose a deep learning method to determine the source focal mechanism of earthquakes in real-time. They trained their network with approximately 800k synthetic samples and managed to successfully estimate the focal mechanism of four 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes with magnitudes larger than Mw 5.4.

Exploring the Dimensionality of Ground-Motion Data by Applying Autoencoder Techniques

Reza Dokht Dolatabadi Esfahani et al.

Summary: This article explores the effective modeling of observed ground-motion data for engineering seismology using a data-driven approach based on a deep learning autoencoder. The study shows that mapping ground-motion data to a 2D manifold primarily captures magnitude and distance information, and the data reconstruction improves with an increasing number of bottleneck nodes up to three or four.

Earthquake magnitude and location estimation from real time seismic waveforms with a transformer network

Jannes Muenchmeyer et al.

Summary: Precise real-time estimates of earthquake magnitude and location are crucial for early warning and rapid response. A new model based on attention-boosted transformer networks has been introduced, showing superior performance in both magnitude and location estimation compared to traditional algorithms, particularly for a wide range of seismic events.

A risk-based approach for managing hydraulic fracturing-induced seismicity

Ryan Schultz et al.

Summary: The study developed a risk-informed strategy for selecting red-light thresholds for immediate well shut-in during hydraulic fracturing operations in the Eagle Ford shale in southern Texas. By simulating impacts, it was found that impacts were greater in the northeast and smaller in the southwest of the area, driven by concentrations of population density. The method provides guidance for managing induced seismicity risks through traffic light protocols.
