Potential predictability of the Ethiopian summer rains: Understanding local variations and their implications for water management decisions

Summary: Understanding the influence of large-scale oceanic and atmospheric variability on rainfall over Ethiopia is crucial for improving seasonal forecasting and informing water management decisions. This study analyzed drivers of Ethiopia's main rainy season, showing local spatial variations and strong correlations between sea surface temperatures and rainfall. It also highlighted mechanisms such as the East African Low-Level Jet and the impact of ENSO and positive IOD events on Ethiopian rainfall. Sub-national analysis on the Awash basin revealed distinct climate zones with different relationships to SSTs. These findings emphasize the importance of locally relevant climate systems for water management in Ethiopia.
