Controls on boron isotopes in a cold-water coral and the cost of resilience to ocean acidification

Alexander C. Gagnon et al.

Summary: Research on coral calcification reveals the sensitivity to environmental change and the ability of physiological processes to buffer biomineralization. Boron isotopes have been shown to be a useful proxy for past seawater pH, and new findings demonstrate their sensitivity to seawater dissolved inorganic carbon. The introduction of boric acid diffusion as a new flux within a geochemical model helps explain the observed sensitivity of coral delta B-11 to multiple factors, including pH and DIC.
