Environmental drivers ofSphagnumgrowth in peatlands across the Holarctic region

Fia Bengtsson et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of global and local environmental factors on the growth and carbon uptake of the Sphagnum genus across 99 Holarctic peatlands. Results showed that climate, nitrogen deposition, water table depth, and vascular plant cover had significant effects on Sphagnum growth, with different responses observed between species. Indirect effects, such as the influence of vascular plant cover on water table depth, nitrogen deposition, precipitation, and temperature, were also important in shaping Sphagnum growth patterns.

Selective retention of extracellular polymeric substances induced by adsorption to and coprecipitation with ferrihydrite

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that microbially-derived compounds, particularly extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), play a significant role in the soil organic matter pool. The interaction between EPS and soil minerals affects the sorption and selective retention of EPS constituents. The study investigates the EPS association pathways with ferrihydrite and their impact on the mobility and fate of microbially-derived organic matter in soil environments.

Production of hydroxyl radicals following water-level drawdown in peatlands: A new induction mechanism for enhancing laccase activity in carbon cycling

Yunpeng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that under oxygenation of waterlogged peat samples for 24 hours, the cumulative concentrations of hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) produced ranged from 307-840 mmol g(-1). Factors affecting center dot OH production include an acidic environment, abundant reduced dissolved organic matter, and Fe(II). Additionally, the production of center dot OH enhanced laccase activity (the largest class of phenol oxidases in the soil) by 7.7% to 20.4% and increased soil respiration by 3.17% to 23.67% during the reoxidation of waterlogged peat samples.
