Cenozoic Dynamic Topography of Madagascar

S. N. Stephenson et al.

Summary: The regional uplift of Madagascar is proposed to be generated and maintained by mantle dynamical processes. Through a combined analysis of multiple observational constraints, it is suggested that around 1 km of topography was formed during the Neogene period. Studies on rare earth element concentrations in Neogene rocks indicate partial melting of the mantle occurred at varying depths and temperatures.

Escarpment retreat rates derived from detrital cosmogenic nuclide concentrations

Yanyan Wang et al.

Summary: High-relief great escarpments at passive margins show a paradoxical combination of high relief but low erosion rates, suggesting low rates of landscape change; in this paper, detrital cosmogenic nuclide concentrations are used to characterize patterns of non-vertical landscape evolution and calculate escarpment retreat rates of the Western Ghats; the inferred escarpment retreat rates vary within a range of hundreds to thousands of meters per Myr, indicating a near-constant retreat rate since rifting.
