Brief Behavioral Therapy and Bupropion for Sleep and Fatigue in Young Adults With Crohn's Disease: An Exploratory Open Trial Study

Jana G. Hashash et al.

Summary: This study examined a stepped-care intervention for poor sleep quality and fatigue in adolescents and young adults with Crohn's disease, finding that behavioral therapy can improve sleep quality but fatigue only partially improves. Adding the psychotropic medication bupropion sustained release to behavioral therapy further improved fatigue, but not significantly compared to behavioral therapy alone.

Integrated Psychological Care Reduces Health Care Costs at a Hospital-Based Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service

Taryn Lores et al.

Summary: This study found that the risk of mental health issues is associated with higher healthcare costs in individuals with IBD. Providing integrated psychological care to those at risk for mental health issues can significantly reduce costs, particularly by decreasing visits to emergency departments. Further research is needed to determine the optimal care to reduce costs.

Abdominal pain in quiescent inflammatory bowel disease

Matthew D. Coates et al.

Summary: In patients with quiescent IBD, the use of corticosteroids, presence of anxiety/depression, and being female were independently associated with the condition. Compared to those with active disease, quiescent IBD patients were more likely to use antidepressants and less likely to have elevated levels of inflammatory markers, although a significant portion still exhibited pathological elevation in at least one marker. New noninvasive screening methods are needed for this condition.

Dilemma in post-IBD patients with IBS-D symptoms: A 2020 overview

Mukaddes Tozlu et al.

Summary: The overlap of clinical symptoms between IBD and IBS complicates the diagnosis and management of post-IBD IBS-D patients. The prevalent theories regarding the pathophysiology of this condition include alterations in mucosal inflammation, the microbiota, mucosal permeability, and gut-brain interactions. Investigation into eosinophilic colopathy and therapy focused on food-derived immune response in patients with post-IBD IBS-D is warranted.

Summary: There is little research on discussions between inflammatory bowel disease patients and healthcare professionals about sexual well-being issues. While participants expressed a desire for such conversations, they often faced barriers. Negative experiences were reported by those who had discussed sexual well-being issues. The study highlights the need for healthcare professionals to pay more attention to patient needs and preferences related to sexual well-being issues.
