Colacogloea armeniacae sp. nov., a novel pucciniomycetous yeast species isolated from apricots

Gui-Shuang Wang et al.

Summary: A survey in May 2019 identified two yeast strains isolated from fresh apricots as a novel species of the genus Colacogloea. These strains differed significantly from known Colacogloea species in genetic and physiological characteristics, leading to the proposal of a new species, C. armeniacae sp. nov.

Interspecific hybridization as a driver of fungal evolution and adaptation

Jan Steensels et al.

Summary: Cross-species gene transfer can also occur in fungal species, leading to intertwined lineages and novel species. Unlike prokaryotes, fungal DNA exchange primarily originates from interspecific hybridization, resulting in highly unstable polyploid genomes that rapidly evolve into stable derivatives with novel genetic and phenotypic variations. Interspecific hybrids can colonize new niches and have been important in the emergence of human and plant pathogens as well as industrially useful yeasts. The study of fungal interspecific hybridization provides insights into evolution, adaptation, and speciation, with potential applications in industrial processes.

Fungal taxonomy and sequence-based nomenclature

Robert Lucking et al.

Summary: Identifying and naming microfungi, especially plant, animal, and human pathogens, remains a challenge. Molecular identification is increasingly used, and environmental metabarcoding is generating a vast amount of sequence data to document global fungal diversity. Solutions for naming taxa known only from sequences are proposed based on bacterial taxonomy methods.

The evolving species concepts used for yeasts: from phenotypes and genomes to speciation networks

Teun Boekhout et al.

Summary: The review discusses the evolving species concepts used to understand yeast diversity, including the phenotypic and biological species concepts, as well as the use of DNA similarity and sequencing technology in species concepts. It recommends the use of complete genomes to enhance our understanding of species and genetic dynamics, and notes the common occurrence of hybridization in fungal lineages containing yeasts.

Extreme diversification driven by parallel events of massive loss of heterozygosity in the hybrid lineage of Candida albicans

Veronica Mixao et al.

Summary: Candida albicans is the most commonly reported species causing candidiasis, with controversial taxonomic classification and potential hybrid origin with Candida africana. Recent genomic analyses suggest a shared hybrid origin of C. albicans and C. africana, with parallel massive loss of heterozygosity in C. stellatoidea as in C. africana.
