Carbon subsidies shift a northern peatland biofilm community towards heterotrophy in low but not high nutrient conditions

Jordan M. Myers et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of nutrients and organic carbon on the relative proportion of primary producers and heterotrophic decomposers in aquatic biofilm development in a boreal peatland. The results showed that decomposers could outcompete algae for available nutrients when organic carbon was elevated and nutrient levels remained low, but not when both organic carbon and nutrients were enriched. Fungal biomass was affected by the presence of glucose, showing lower levels when glucose was present alone but stimulated along with algae following nutrient enrichment.

Assessing the role of livestock and sympatric wild ruminants in spreading antimicrobial resistant Campylobacter and Salmonella in alpine ecosystems

Johan Espunyes et al.

Summary: The study found that free-ranging cattle and sheep in the alpine environment are spreaders of Campylobacter and its antimicrobial resistance strains, while alpine wild ungulates like Pyrenean chamois play a negligible role in the epidemiology of these pathogens and antibiotic-resistant strains.

Trophic interactions regulate peatland carbon cycling

Biofilms and Coronavirus Reservoirs: a Perspective Review

Rafael Gomes Von Borowski et al.

Summary: Bats serve as a key reservoir for coronaviruses, with the ability to establish biofilms with multiple microorganisms, potentially explaining their ability to persistently carry viruses without developing illnesses. This biofilm environment provides an optimal setting for nonpathogenic viruses to interact with hosts and for viral recombination, while also enhancing virion viability in extracellular environments. Understanding the biofilm lifestyle of coronaviruses in bat reservoirs may shed light on the persistence and transmissibility of highly pathogenic emerging coronaviruses.
