Coal-water slurry atomization in a new pneumatic nozzle and combustion in a low-power industrial burner

E. Yu Shadrin et al.

Summary: A new pneumatic nozzle for spraying coal-water fuel based on near-wall and cumulative jets and Coanda effect has been tested, showing the potential for efficient joint combustion of CWS and pulverized coal fuel. The results indicate that NOx emissions meet requirements for coal-fired boilers, and emissions of other substances are close to zero even with suboptimal operating and design parameters.

Experimental investigation of size of fuel droplets formed by steam jet impact

Igor S. Anufriev et al.

Summary: The study examined the disintegration process of liquid hydrocarbon fuel into droplets under the impact of a superheated steam jet through shadow photography and high-speed visualization. Different types of fuels, including diesel, oil, and kerosene, were tested to determine their spraying conditions in a real burner. The proposed method of fuel spraying was found to provide effective dispersion for high-quality combustion, applicable to liquid fuel burners and low-emission gas turbine engines, even when burning liquid combustible waste.

PIV/PLIF investigation of unsteady turbulent flow and mixing behind a model gas turbine combustor

Dmitriy K. Sharaborin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates turbulent transport and fuel mixing in a model gas-turbine swirl burner based on a design by Turbomeca. Two different regimes of fuel injection are compared, organizing lean, well-premixed combustion and providing a pilot flame. The study uses advanced measurement techniques to analyze the flow dynamics and quantifies the contributions of coherent flow fluctuations to turbulent transport, providing relevant data for validating numerical methods for simulating unsteady turbulent mixing in swirl combustors.

Improvement of atomization characteristics of coal-water slurries

Dmitry Gvozdyakov et al.

Summary: Experimental study shows that the addition of ethyl or isoamyl alcohol in coal-water slurries can improve atomization technology, reduce droplet velocities, and increase the concentration of small droplets. These findings have significant practical value for the application of three-component suspensions in thermal power engineering.

Particle formation during suspension combustion of different biomass powders and their fast pyrolysis bio-oils and biochars

Ann-Christine Johansson et al.

Summary: The study reveals differences in fly ash formation mechanisms between bio-oil, biochar, and solid biomass fuels during combustion, suggesting the need to select suitable fuels for different applications. Oxygen enrichment did not affect the release of inorganic elements in bio-oil combustion, which generates lower fly ash content and is suitable for technologies requiring fuels with very low ash content. Biochar, on the other hand, should be used in large-scale combustion facilities with experienced teams to manage ash-related operational problems.
