A machine learning approach to improve ignition properties of high-ash Indian coals by solvent extraction and coal blending

Srishti Mittal et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve the ignition characteristics of Indian coals using solvent extraction and coal blending. Solvent extraction was found to reduce the activation energy of the coals by approximately 50%. Analysis on the chemical composition and ignition properties of Chinese coals and their blends showed that moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon, calorific value, oxygen, and carbon content were the most relevant factors affecting ignition temperature and activation energy.

Simulation of the meso-macro-scale fracture network development law of coal water injection based on a SEM reconstruction fracture COHESIVE model

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: This study focused on the development laws of fracture networks during water injection fracturing in coal samples. Using scanning electron microscope technology, image digital processing, simplified model processing, and fractal algorithm verification methods, researchers were able to determine fracture development laws at the macro and meso scales. The study found that pore pressure, natural fractures, and water injection pressure all played important roles in the fracture development process.

Effect of acetic acid concentration on functional group and microcrystalline structure of bituminous coal

Yanbin Yu et al.

Summary: The chemical dissolution of mineral components has a positive effect on permeability of coal and oil reservoirs. Strong corrosive acids have safety concerns and high consumption rate, while weak corrosive organic acids require further research. Different concentrations of acetic acid impact coal's functional groups and crystal structure significantly.

Investigating the proppant damage mechanisms expected in a propped coal fracture and its effect on fracture flow

M. A. A. Ahamed et al.

Summary: The study found that sand proppants are more effective than ceramic proppants in shallow conditions, but less efficient in deeper depths where ceramic proppants are more effective. The shape of the proppants strongly influences the variation of fracture width, with sand propped fractures experiencing significant width variation under low confining stress conditions.

Coal mine gas separation of methane via clathrate hydrate process aided by tetrahydrofuran and amino acids

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Coal bed methane (CBM) is currently not commercially viable in many regions due to the high concentration of non-flammable gases. Gas separation via gas hydrate using environmentally benign amino acids such as L-tryptophan and L-leucine has shown potential for improving methane recovery and separation efficiency. The combination of amino acids with tetrahydrofuran (THF) can enhance the CH4 recovery ratio and initial hydrate growth rate, providing a promising method for recovering low-concentration CBM.

Microstructure characteristics of lignite under the synergistic effect of oxidizing acid and ionic liquid [Bmim][Cl]

Li Shang et al.

Summary: This study modified the microstructure of coal through the synergistic effect of oxidizing acid and ionic liquid, revealing that the synergistic treatment makes the molecular structure of coal more unstable, increases the aromaticity, makes the microstructure more compact, and tends to graphitization.

Effect of acid and alkali solutions on micro-components of coal

Qingfeng Xu et al.

Summary: The experiments conducted on coal samples soaked in hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide showed that both substances could effectively dissolve kaolinite in coal, with higher concentration solutions having a more pronounced erosion effect. However, neither could completely eliminate kaolinite. Hydrochloric acid mainly affects the surface morphology of the coal body, while sodium hydroxide produces sediment attached to the surface.

Chelating agent-introduced unconventional compound acid for enhancing coal permeability

Shuya Chen et al.

Summary: The low permeability of coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs is attributed to cementing minerals, which block the flow of water and gas in the pores and fractures. Acid stimulation is a promising method to improve coal permeability by dissolving these inorganic minerals. Laboratory experiments investigated the interactions between various acids and coal samples, leading to the optimization of a compound acid system that greatly enhanced CBM recovery by increasing coal porosity and permeability.
