Thermal atomization during droplet impingement on superhydrophobic surfaces: Influence of Weber number and micropost array configuration

Preston Emerson et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigated the thermal atomization intensity during droplet impingement on superheated hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces with varying microstructure. Changes in surface temperature, Weber number, and microstructure configuration were shown to significantly influence atomization intensity, which is directly linked to three main mechanisms accounting for atomization dynamics in impingement scenarios.

Acting mechanism of low ambient temperature on wall-impinging diesel spray ignition at an extensive range

Yaozong Li et al.

Summary: Impinging spray ignition has been studied through 3-D simulation at different ambient temperatures and wall temperatures, revealing that fuel-air mixing and ignition processes are influenced by wall cooling. As temperature decreases, attached fuel mass increases linearly and ignition threshold rises, while the participation of fuel film in combustion decreases.

Laser induced fluorescence investigation on deposited fuel film from spray impingement on viscous film over a solid wall

Chenxi Wang et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigated deposited fuel film characteristics under dry and viscous surface using the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) method. Results showed that viscous film could buffer and inhibit the deposition of spray fuel, whereas with increasing injection mass, the characteristics of deposited film on dry surface deteriorated rapidly.

Environment-adaptive method to control intake preheating for diesel engines at cold-start conditions

Yikai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the minimum intake preheating powers at different ambient temperatures and densities using optical experiments, engine bench tests, and thermodynamic theory. A map chart was established to show the relationship between intake preheating power, ambient temperature, and altitude. Results show that the minimum intake preheating power increases linearly as ambient temperature decreases at the speed of first injection and has different turning points with the change of altitude.

Effect of injection pressure and fuel mass on wall-impinging ignition and combustion characteristics of heavy-duty diesel engine at low temperatures

Zhicheng Shi et al.

Summary: Wall-impinging ignition has been widely studied, but remains poorly understood at low temperatures. The injection pressure effect is highly sensitive to temperature, and increased injection pressure can optimize combustion at high temperatures while causing ignition instability at low temperatures.
