Drought limits wood production of Juniperus przewalskii even as growing seasons lengthens in a cold and arid environment

Junzhou Zhang et al.

Summary: Research on xylogenesis of Juniperus przewalskii Kom. on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau reveals that temperature is crucial for wood formation, with a daily mean temperature of 6.1 degrees C as the threshold for growth onset, and the end of xylogenesis is linked to summer drought conditions. Despite a slight lengthening of the growing season over the past six years, an increase in duration did not necessarily result in higher wood production, indicating that water availability, particularly early summer precipitation, plays a key role in wood production in the region.

Temporal changes in Mediterranean forest ecosystem services are driven by stand development, rather than by climate-related disturbances

Jose V. Roces-Diaz et al.

Summary: The study found that over the past 25 years in the Mediterranean Region, there have been changes in forest ecosystem services, with timber volume increment, water provision, and carbon sequestration declining, while erosion mitigation increasing. Stands with high basal areas were associated with steeper declines in most ecosystem services, while high mean tree diameter generally contributed to increases in ecosystem services.

Tree growth is more limited by drought in rear-edge forests most of the times

J. Julio Camarero et al.

Summary: The study found that in rear-edge tree populations, the response to drought is more pronounced in southern plant communities than in central ones, especially in drought-sensitive tree species such as beech and pine. However, in some widespread tree species, such as oak and pine, there is also increased sensitivity to drought.
