Toward Best Practice in Livestock Microbiota Research: A Comprehensive Comparison of Sample Storage and DNA Extraction Strategies

Gertrude Wegl et al.

Summary: Understanding the roles of microorganisms in the animal gastrointestinal microenvironment is crucial for managing and manipulating microbial communities. A systematic comparison of sample preservation and DNA extraction approaches for pig and chicken microbiota samples showed that these technical steps can significantly affect microbial community structure, with effects varying by sample type. Standardization is essential for accelerating progress in livestock microbiota research.

Mechanism of deoxynivalenol mediated gastrointestinal toxicity: Insights from mitochondrial dysfunction

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis, involving functions in cellular energy metabolism, redox homeostasis, apoptosis, intestinal immune responses, and bidirectional cross-talk with gut microbe. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a critical factor in DON-induced intestinal toxicity, characterized by respiratory failure and ROS overproduction, leading to apoptosis initiation and inflammatory response. The disruption of bidirectional cross-talk between gut microbe and host mitochondria may contribute to DON-induced intestinal toxicity.
