Effect of low concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles on the physical and chemical properties of sodium alginate-based films

Luis Marangoni Junior et al.

Summary: Adding low concentrations of nano-SiO2 can significantly improve the thermal stability of films based on sodium alginate, while concentrations above 1.0% may lead to agglomeration of the nanomaterial. Mechanical properties are reduced at concentrations of 1.0% and 1.5%, but water vapor and light barrier properties remain relatively unchanged.

Water vapor sorption and permeability of sustainable alginate/collagen/SiO2 composite films

Luis Marangoni Junior et al.

Summary: Research on blend films of sodium alginate (SA) and hydrolyzed collagen (HC) containing SiO2 nanoparticles showed that concentrations higher than 6% led to significant reductions in film water content and WVP. The moisture sorption behavior exhibited a type III isotherm, indicating reduced interactions with water vapor at low water activity. These findings suggest that SA/HC/SiO2 composite films could be a simple, economical, and sustainable alternative for packaging with reduced water sensitivity.

Effect of Rice Bran Addition on Physical Properties of Antimicrobial Biocomposite Films Based on Starch

Sofia Berti et al.

Summary: The study focused on the development of composite tapioca starch films with processed rice bran microparticles, including natural antimicrobials, to meet the increasing consumer demands for safe and high-quality food packaging. The addition of 0.2% processed rice bran significantly improved the mechanical properties of the films, leading to enhanced tensile strength and reduced solubility in water, showing optimal compatibility with the starch matrix. Analysis also indicated good compatibility between filler and matrix through hydrophilic groups, with the composite films allowing the diffusion of natural preservatives for food preservation.
