Order review and release in make-to-order flow shops: analysis and design of new methods

Kaustav Kundu et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop the best Order Review and Release (ORR) method for flow shops. The results show that performance in flow shops can be significantly improved by applying the right combination of workload measures, load balancing, and order dispatching.

Rule based workload control in semiconductor manufacturing revisited

Philipp Neuner et al.

Summary: An essential task in manufacturing planning and control is to determine when to release orders to the shop floor. This study compares the adapted LUMS-COR model with two approaches from the semiconductor manufacturing literature, showing that the LUMS-COR model yields lower total costs and better performance compared to the other two order release approaches, and is robust across different settings.

Defining accurate delivery dates in make to order job-shops managed by workload control

Davide Mezzogori et al.

Summary: This study proposed a method that integrates a simple WLC system with a predictive tool to reduce variability in queuing time and make the forecasting approach more useful in industrial applications. Through simulation testing in a 6-machines job-shop controlled with WLC and equipped with the proposed forecasting system, the robustness and quality of the approach were demonstrated.

Order release planning with predictive lead times: a machine learning approach

Manuel Schneckenreither et al.

Summary: The key parameter in order release is lead time, traditional models assume static lead times, but dynamic setting can better reflect system dynamics. Setting lead times dynamically using artificial neural networks can improve accuracy and reduce costs, especially in scenarios with high variability in processing times and high utilisation.
