Influence of specimen size on the mechanical properties of microlattices obtained by selective laser melting

Matteo Gavazzoni et al.

Summary: A detailed study of compression tests on lattice structures obtained by selective laser melting with AlSi7Mg powder was conducted, investigating the effect of different cell topologies on the mechanical response. While specimen size had influence on maximum stress and failure mechanism, it did not significantly affect elastic modulus and yielding stress. Test results were compared with simulation results, showing good prediction accuracy in terms of elastic modulus and yielding stress.

Experimental and numerical mechanical characterization of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V lattice structures considering progressive damage

Sven Druecker et al.

Summary: The rapid progress in additive manufacturing allows for the generation of complex structures customized for various applications. Characterizing the mechanical properties of lattice structures in design of structural parts involves understanding the selective laser melting process complexities, manufacturing imperfections, and microstructure influences. Through finite element simulations and digital image correlation, deeper insights into failure processes and comparisons between lattice structures and unit cell simulations with periodic boundary conditions have been gained.

Architected cellular materials: A review on their mechanical properties towards fatigue-tolerant design and fabrication

M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.

Additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V thin struts via laser powder bed fusion: Effect of building orientation on geometrical accuracy and mechanical properties

S. Murchio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties of thin L-PBF Ti6Al4V lattice struts at different building orientations. The results showed a tendency for fatigue life to decrease with decreasing building angle, mainly due to the increase in surface texture and decrease in cross-sectional regularity for low printing angles. The sensitivity to these factors was low in monotonic tensile tests, and strut failure behavior was examined using dynamic digital image correlation (DIC) of tensile tests and scanning electron imaging (SEM) of fracture surfaces.

Uniaxial static mechanical properties of regular, irregular and random additively manufactured cellular materials: Nominal vs. real geometry

Sunil Raghavendra et al.

Summary: This study investigated cellular materials as potential replacements for solid implants due to their mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Titanium alloy cellular materials of different topologies were manufactured and tested, showing Young's modulus values close to human cortical bone and suggesting that regular structures are more prone to catastrophic failure compared to irregular and trabecular structures.
