Analysis of heterogeneity of fatigue properties of double-sided electron beam welded 140-mm thick TC4 titanium alloy joints

Jian Long et al.

Summary: This research delved into the fatigue properties of double-sided electron beam welded joints, revealing that the materials in the overlap region of the two weld seams exhibited significantly inferior low-cycle fatigue properties due to more second-phase precipitates. The mechanical properties near the overlap region in the joint showed significant heterogeneity, contributing to the overall weakening of mechanical properties.

Microstructural characteristics and computational investigation on electron beam welded Ti-6Al-4 V alloy

Yu Lu et al.

Summary: A framework for simulating the microstructural evolution during electron beam welding of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with different initial parent microstructures was presented, highlighting the impact of thermal processing on the emerging microstructure features. Microstructure characterisation using microscopy techniques provided insight into the physically-based parameters necessary for predicting microstructures in EBW processes.

Fatigue life evaluation of Ti-6Al-4V welded joints manufactured by electron beam melting

Yanan Hu et al.

Summary: Electron beam melting (EBM) technology shows promise in 3D printing complex components, but faces challenges in manufacturing large-scale parts due to limitations of enclosed vacuum chambers. This study measured fatigue crack growth rate and high-cycle fatigue performance of EBM-processed titanium alloy and welded joints, proposing an X-parameter model to evaluate fatigue life. The research framework and results are expected to provide a reference for assessing fatigue life of welded parts made through additive manufacturing.

Zoning study on the fatigue crack propagation behaviors of a double-sided electron beam welded joint of TC4 titanium alloy with the thickness of 140 mm

Jian Long et al.

Summary: This study analyzed fatigue crack propagation rates, observed metallographic microstructures, and studied precipitates in different zones of a double-sided EBW joint of Ti alloy. The results showed that weld metal in the second layer had poor resistance to fatigue crack propagation, and needle-shaped martensites were found in the heat affected zones of each layer.

Extension of the process limits in laser beam welding of thick-walled components using the Laser Multi-Pass Narrow-Gap welding (Laser-MPNG) on the example of the nickel-based material Alloy 617 occ

Benjamin Kessler et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new laser beam welding process, Laser Multi-Pass Narrow-Gap welding, which successfully achieved welds without cracks or bonding defects in a thickness of 140 mm nickel-based material Alloy 617. The promising results of creep and low-cycle fatigue tests demonstrate the potential for future industrial applications of Laser-MPNG welded joints.

A novel strategy for developing α plus β dual-phase titanium alloys with low Young's modulus and high yield strength

Yu Fu et al.

Summary: A novel strategy for developing alpha + beta dual-phase titanium alloys with low Young's modulus and high yield strength was proposed in this study, and an alloy was successfully developed through theoretical composition design and microstructure manipulation. The experimental results confirm that the developed alloy exhibits both low Young's modulus and high yield strength, indicating the potential for advanced biomedical titanium alloys with superior properties.
