Potential roles of astrocytes and Muller cells in the pathogenesis of glaucoma

Youichi Shinozaki et al.

Summary: Glaucoma, a progressive optic neuropathy and leading cause of blindness worldwide, is characterized by impairment of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), with elevated intraocular pressure as a major risk factor. However, a notable proportion of patients, especially in Japan, have normal intraocular pressure. The role of glial cells in glaucoma pathogenesis is being increasingly recognized, with reactive glial cells identified in glaucoma patients and animal models, suggesting their potential involvement in the disease process.

Glial Cells in Glaucoma: Friends, Foes, and Potential Therapeutic Targets

Mariana Y. Garcia-Bermudez et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, affecting around 80 million people by 2020. Despite lowering intraocular pressure being the only proven treatment to slow disease progression, a significant number of patients still go blind. Therefore, the search for alternative treatment strategies is crucial.

Molecular Mechanisms Related to Oxidative Stress in Retinitis Pigmentosa

Carla Enrica Gallenga et al.

Summary: Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic retinopathy, but non-genetic factors such as inflammation, autophagy, and oxidative stress play a crucial role in its pathogenesis and progression. Oxidative stress, caused by constant exposure to light/oxidative stress, results in accumulation of ROS in the retina, leading to microglial activation and photoreceptor degeneration. Various genetic mutations and alterations in cellular response contribute to the vicious cycle of neuroinflammation and degeneration in RP, suggesting microglia as a key target for oxidative stress therapy.
