Evolution of Embryo Implantation Was Enabled by the Origin of Decidual Stromal Cells in Eutherian Mammals

Arun R. Chavan et al.

Summary: Evolutionary mechanism of ancestral inflammatory response transformed into embryo implantation in the eutherian lineage was elucidated by comparative study of several mammalian species. Decidual stromal cells were proposed to mediate the suppression of detrimental modules in the inflammatory response. The results provide a mechanistic understanding of early stages in the evolution of eutherian pregnancy.

From environmental sensing to developmental control: cognitive evolution in dictyostelid social amoebas

Pauline Schaap

Summary: Dictyostelid social amoebas respond to starvation by self-organizing into multicellular slugs that migrate towards light to construct spore-bearing structures. These behaviors depend on excitable networks that enable amoebas to produce propagating waves of the chemoattractant cAMP, and to respond by directional movement. Evolutionary studies indicate how the manifold roles of cAMP in multicellular development evolved from a role as intermediate for starvation-induced encystation in the unicellular ancestor.

Gene expression regulates metabolite homeostasis during the Crabtree effect: Implications for the adaptation and evolution of Metabolism

Douglas L. Rothman et al.

Summary: Research indicates that during the Crabtree effect in yeast, short-term adaptation depends on the ability of the glycogen/trehalose shunt to balance the glycolytic pathway, with later gene expression of new isoforms of glycolytic enzymes providing additional homeostatic mechanisms for increased ATP production and product efficiency while maintaining glycolytic balance.

A flagellate-to-amoeboid switch in the closest living relatives of animals

Thibaut Brunet et al.

Summary: Research suggests that choanoflagellates can switch to an amoeboid form when confined, retracting their flagella and activating myosin-based motility for escape. The conservation of the amoeboid cell phenotype across animals and choanoflagellates, along with the role of myosin, supports the hypothesis of homology in motility between the two lineages.

Sulfur sequestration promotes multicellularity during nutrient limitation

Beth Kelly et al.

Summary: The behavior of Dictyostelium discoideum is dependent on nutrients, existing as unicellular organisms in the presence of sufficient food and aggregating into multicellular organisms upon starvation. The generation of reactive oxygen species due to nutrient limitation leads to the sequestration of cysteine in the antioxidant glutathione, limiting its sulfur atom usage and maintaining the organism in a nonproliferating state conducive to multicellular development. This mechanism of signaling through reactive oxygen species highlights the roles of oxygen and sulfur as simple signaling molecules in dictating cell fate in early eukaryotes, with implications for responses to nutrient fluctuations in multicellular eukaryotes.

Evolution of Multicellular Complexity in The Dictyostelid Social Amoebas

Koryu Kin et al.

Summary: Multicellularity has evolved repeatedly in the history of life, with Dictyostelid social amoebas providing a good system for studying this evolution. Research shows that complex life cycles were already present in the unicellular common ancestor of Dictyostelids, with frost resistance proposed as an early driver of multicellular evolution in these organisms. Additionally, cell signalling pathways for differentiating spore and stalk cells evolved from that for encystation, with new cell types further evolving through gene duplication.
