Chronic low back pain, bacterial infection and treatment with antibiotics

Christopher J. Gilligan et al.

Summary: The contribution of bacterial infection to chronic low back pain and its treatment with antibiotics have sparked considerable debate in literature. Some studies suggest that oral antibiotics can significantly reduce pain and disability in certain subsets of patients with chronic low back pain, while others argue that their effects are limited.

The Prevalence of Bacterial Infection in Patients Undergoing Elective ACDF for Degenerative Cervical Spine Conditions: A Prospective Cohort Study With Contaminant Control

Louis J. Bivona et al.

Summary: In patients undergoing ACDF, the prevalence of subclinical bacterial infection was 17.7%. While our results excluded patients with positive contaminant control, the possibility of contamination of disc cultures could not be entirely rejected. Overall, culture results did not have any influence on postoperative outcomes.
