Quasiliving Cationic Polymerization of Anethole: Accessing High-Performance Plastic from the Biomass-Derived Monomer

Maksim Hulnik et al.

Summary: The quasiliving cationic polymerization of anethole in the presence of SnCl4 as a coinitiator was successfully achieved, resulting in poly(anethole)s with high molecular weight and relatively low polydispersity. The synthesized polymers showed excellent physical properties and enhanced resistance to bacterial growth compared to polystyrene.

On the limitations of cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers in aqueous dispersed media

Aurelie Destephen et al.

Summary: Cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers in water is limited due to carbocations reactivity towards water and the sensitivity of Lewis acid catalysts to water, but using water tolerant Lewis acid catalysts allows for polymer synthesis in dispersed media. The polymerizations in dispersed media proceed under pseudo-bulk conditions, with the molar mass dependent on water content and the rate of chain transfer to water.
