Soil weathering behavior assessed by combined spectral ranges: Insights into aggregate analysis

Clecia Cristina Barbosa Guimaraes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic performance of various spectral ranges on the weathering process of soils developed from magmatic material. It found that a synergic approach using multiple spectral ranges was more efficient in separating soil horizons by weathering degree compared to a single spectral region.

Reflectance spectroscopy applied to clay mineralogy and alteration intensity of a thick basaltic weathering sequence in Hainan Island, South China

Jia-cheng Liu et al.

Summary: Visible/near infrared reflectance spectroscopy is an efficient tool for identifying and semi-quantifying clay minerals and Fe3+ oxides in mineralogical evolution during weathering. This study in Hainan Island utilized spectroscopy to describe mineralogical transitions and weathering intensity, with the increasing BD1400/BD1900 index value correlating positively with the chemical index of alteration and Al2O3 concentration. Reflectance spectroscopy proves to be a powerful method for studying protolith changes in weathering sequences and understanding weathering related to paleoclimate on Earth or other planets.

Formation of plinthite mediated by redox fluctuations and chemical weathering intensity in a Quaternary red soil, southern China

Lulu Zhao et al.

Summary: Comparative analysis of iron and clay mineralogy, magnetic properties, VNIR spectral behavior, and chemical weathering between plinthic and homogeneous soils in QRSs in southern China revealed differences in weathering intensity and mineral composition, suggesting that pedogenic processes play a key role in the formation of plinthic soils. The formation of plinthic soils in QRSs is influenced by seasonal redox fluctuations and aridification during glacial stages, highlighting the importance of understanding pedogenesis and mineral transformation in tropical/subtropical regions.

Fusion of Vis-NIR and XRF spectra for estimation of key soil attributes

S. Hamed Javadi et al.

Summary: Precision agriculture aims to optimize farming inputs for increased efficiency and environmental protection. This study explored data fusion for predicting key soil attributes using Vis-NIR and XRF spectra, with promising results for accuracy improvement, particularly with the SF-CNN method in predicting attributes like Mg, pH, and Na.

Anoxic chemical weathering under a reducing greenhouse on early Mars

J. Liu et al.

Summary: Comparative analysis of weathered bedrock in the Mawrth Vallis region of Mars and on Hainan Island, China, provides geological evidence for a reduced greenhouse atmosphere on early Mars, similar to early Earth. Evidence of strong Fe loss suggests that the ancient Martian surface was chemically weathered under a reducing greenhouse atmosphere, indicating a significant geological change on Mars.
