Single Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Deteriorates Progressive Interhemispheric Functional and Structural Connectivity

Zhuonan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated dynamic interhemispheric structural and functional connectivity in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) patients from early subacute to chronic stages within 1 year of injury. The results showed persistent and time-dependent regional specificity in the loss of integrity in the corpus callosum (CC) after mTBI, with impairment spanning multiple segments over time. Additionally, the loss of interhemispheric structural connectivity through the CC corresponded well to regions presenting altered interhemispheric functional connectivity, leading to decreased executive function in mTBI patients.

Decoupling of Structural and Functional Connectivity in Hubs and Cognitive Impairment After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Shan Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that most global network properties were conserved in both structural and functional connectivity networks in subacute mild TBI. However, structural connectivity networks exhibited decreased global efficiency and characteristic path length at follow-up. The relationship between structural and functional connectivity in patients showed significant decoupling primarily in hub regions over time.

White matter microstructure of the neural emotion regulation circuitry in mild traumatic brain injury

Harm Jan van der Horn et al.

Summary: This longitudinal tractography study found microstructural changes in emotion regulation tracts among patients with mild traumatic brain injury, particularly in those without complications. However, the presence of symptoms could not be explained by these changes.

Acute Diffusion Tensor and Kurtosis Imaging and Outcome following Mild and Traumatic Brain Injury

Jonas Stenberg et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study investigated the associations between acute diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) metrics and persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) 3 months after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Patients who developed PPCS had poorer white matter microstructural integrity acutely after the injury, compared with patients who recovered and healthy controls. Differences became less pronounced when cognitive reserve was controlled for, suggesting that pre-existing individual differences in axonal integrity accounted for some of the observed differences.

Accelerated Brain Aging in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Longitudinal Pattern Recognition with White Matter Integrity

Shuoqiu Gan et al.

Summary: This study examined the acceleration of brain-aging process by mTBI, finding that the brains of acute mTBI patients were estimated to be older with greater brain-PAD compared to healthy controls. Older individuals or those with post-concussion symptoms showed larger brain-PAD, which could predict information processing speed at follow-up. The findings suggest that mTBI can accelerate brain aging and brain-PAD may be useful in evaluating aging-related issues post-injury.

A Longitudinal Study of White Matter Functional Network in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Xiaoyan Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that acute mTBI patients showed enhanced functional connectivity between IFOF WM-FN and primary sensorimotor WM-FNs, as well as cortical primary sensorimotor GM-FNs compared to healthy controls. Acute mTBI patients also displayed increased DTI metrics in deep WM-FNs and higher-order cognitive WM-FNs. Additionally, mTBI patients demonstrated full recovery of FC and partial recovery of DTI metrics in the chronic stage. Enhanced FC between IFOF WM-FN and anterior cerebellar GM-FN was correlated with impaired information processing speed.
