Spectrum of neonatal COVID-19 in Iran: 19 infants with SARS-CoV-2 perinatal infections with varying test results, clinical findings and outcomes

David A. Schwartz et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the epidemiology, diagnostic test results, and clinical findings of neonatal COVID-19 in Iran. The results showed significant variation in the cases, with some neonates initially testing negative but later becoming positive. Two neonates were highly suspicious for intrauterine vertical transmission. The study recommends repeat testing for neonates testing negative initially to avoid misdiagnosis.

Clinical characteristics of confirmed COVID-19 in newborns: a systematic review

Meltem Karabay et al.

Summary: This systematic review explored neonatal outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection, showing respiratory difficulty and fever as the most common symptoms in newborns and no fatalities due to COVID-19 infection in the neonatal period. More data with additional cases are needed for further insights.

Nasal expression of SARS-CoV-2 entry receptors in newborns

Santtu Heinonen et al.

Summary: Both term and preterm newborns exhibit lower expression levels of SARS-CoV-2 entry receptors in the nasal epithelium compared with adults. The low nasal expression of these receptors in newborns may contribute to the low attack rates and mild disease observed in this population.

Epidemiological, Clinical, and Laboratory Features of Children With COVID-19 in Turkey

Adem Karbuz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory features of pediatric COVID-19 cases in Turkey. A total of 1,156 confirmed cases were included in the study, with the most common symptoms being fever and cough. Children of all ages appear to be susceptible to COVID-19, with significant differences in symptomatology and laboratory findings by age group.

Association of Maternal Perinatal SARS-CoV-2 Infection With Neonatal Outcomes During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Massachusetts

Asimenia Angelidou et al.

Summary: This multicenter cohort study in Massachusetts examined the percentage of neonates born to mothers with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results and factors associated with neonatal test result positivity. The study found that maternal social vulnerability was a significant risk factor for neonatal test result positivity, and adverse outcomes in newborns were linked to preterm delivery due to worsening maternal COVID-19 symptoms.

Benign course and clinical features of COVID-19 in hospitalised febrile infants up to 60 days old

Havazelet Yarden Bilavski et al.

Summary: Data on the severity of COVID-19 in febrile infants under 60 days old is lacking. A multicentre prospective study in Israel from March 2020 to January 2021 found that most infants had mild illness and excellent outcomes, with no fatalities or complications reported. The clinical course of young febrile infants with COVID-19 resembled other respiratory viral causes of fever in this age group.

Newborns at risk of Covid-19-lessons from the last year

Malika D. Shah et al.

Summary: After more than 1 year of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a lot of knowledge has been accumulated on how the virus affects pregnant women, the fetus, and newborns. Although both vertical and horizontal transmission are rare, SARS-CoV-2 positivity is associated with increased risk of premature delivery and higher neonatal mortality and morbidity. Guidelines on handling newborn infants have become more consistent, recommending skin-to-skin contact, rooming in, and breastfeeding with necessary hygiene precautions.
