Characterizing the differences between multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and Kawasaki disease

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the new MIS-C in Israeli children and compare it with KD. Although there is clinical overlap between MIS-C and KD, the characteristics of MIS-C patients include older age, hypotension, significant gastrointestinal symptoms, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, and non-coronary abnormal findings in echocardiogram. Lymphopenia serves as an independent predictor of MIS-C, and corticosteroid therapy is effective for most MIS-C patients.

A case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children in a Japanese boy: with discussion of cytokine profile

Summary: MIS-C, a new disease concept established in 2020, is a systemic inflammatory syndrome with organ involvement commonly seen in Hispanic and black children in Europe and North America but rarely reported in East Asians. Patients with MIS-C have a higher risk of developing KD-like symptoms, making differential diagnosis challenging, especially in East Asia where KD is prevalent.
