An elastic metal-organic crystal with a densely catenated backbone

Wenjing Meng et al.

Summary: The study reports a three-dimensional porous metal-organic crystal with exceptional structure connected only by catenation, showing dynamic geometry changes upon different conditions. The crystal has low Young's moduli and high deformability, especially along its c axis. This mechanically interlocked molecule-based design could lead to the development of porous materials with exotic mechanical properties, such as squeezable porous crystals.

Selective Separation of Phenanthrene from Aromatic Isomer Mixtures by a Water-Soluble Azobenzene-Based Macrocycle

Yuezhou Liu et al.

Summary: A light-responsive water-soluble azobenzene-based macrocycle was synthesized and successfully employed in separating PHE from anthracene via a solid-liquid extraction method at ambient conditions. After five extraction cycles, the average purity for PHE reached about 91.1% and the macrocycle could be reused at least five times without significant reduction in separation performance. This work not only provides a new and clean way to separate PHE, but also advances the application of host-guest chemistry.

Active mechanisorption driven by pumping cassettes

Liang Feng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates mechanisorption on surfaces of metal-organic frameworks, creating large potential gradients between the adsorbent and the adsorbate through pumping to form mechanical bonds. Mechanisorption extends the scope and potential of adsorption phenomena and offers a transformative approach to control surface chemistry.

Imino-thiotate-templated synthesis of a chloride-selective neutral macrocyclic host with a specific turn-off-on fluorescence response for hypochlorite (ClO-)

Kajetan Dabrowa et al.

Summary: By replacing one oxygen atom with sulfur, a novel macrocyclic host 2 was synthesized to selectively recognize chloride ions, achieving a high yield in a sterically demanding environment through external and internal templating effects. The host demonstrated high selectivity towards chloride ions in H-1-NMR titration experiments, showcasing a novel metal-free macrocyclic sensor for the detection of this analyte.
