A Data-Driven Method for Reconstructing a Distribution from a Truncated Sample with an Application to Inferring Car-Sharing Demand

Summary: This paper introduces a novel detruncation method based on weight learning for recovering an unknown probability distribution from censored or truncated samples. The proposed method is found to perform slightly worse than perfectly specified MLE but competitively with slightly misspecified MLE in various synthetic validation experiments. The practical application of this method is demonstrated through case studies estimating demand for round-trip car-sharing services in the Boston and New York metropolitan areas.

Heterogeneous Explore-Exploit Strategies on Multi-Star Networks

Summary: The study investigates the benefits of heterogeneity in multi-agent explore-exploit decision making to maximize cumulative group reward. By incorporating heterogeneity into agent choices, especially in irregular network graphs where agents have different numbers of neighbors, group performance can be improved. The design and analysis of new heterogeneous explore-exploit strategies, using a multi-star model as an irregular network graph, show promising results in providing more useful data for peripheral agents. Theoretical guarantees are provided that group performance improves under heterogeneous strategies compared to homogeneous strategies.
