Quality monitoring method for apples of different maturity under long-term cold storage

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: With the development of the apple industry, non-destructive testing technology based on visible/near infrared spectroscopy for checking the internal quality of apples has attracted attention. A reliable and rapid non-destructive testing method is needed to monitor the internal quality of apples during cold storage, which is influenced by the quality from different maturity levels and changes in cell structure. Models were established to predict the soluble solids content and firmness of apples during cold storage, with long-wave near infrared providing better prediction for SSC and visible-near-infrared for firmness. The prediction accuracy of the models for apples at different maturity levels during cold storage was high, and a combined model for all samples showed satisfactory accuracy, providing a theoretical basis for improving the industrial quality inspection and classification of apples during cold storage.

Evaluation of a handheld ultra-compact NIR spectrometer for rapid and non-destructive determination of apple fruit quality

Audrey Pissard et al.

Summary: The study compared the analytical performance of benchtop and portable spectrometers for evaluating quality parameters of apples and found that they offered similar performance. Calibration transfer between devices using LS-SVM method showed significant improvement in prediction accuracy with only a few transfer samples needed.
