Sports-Related Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Germany

Philipp Bohm et al.

Summary: This study established a registry on sports-related sudden cardiac arrest in order to estimate the incidence and describe the etiologies in Germany. Most cases occurred during nonelite competitive or recreational sports, with premature CAD, SADS, and myocarditis as the leading causes in young athletes, and CAD as the predominant cause in athletes aged 35 and above. The importance of country-specific registries for defining screening and prevention strategies was highlighted.

Life-threatening and major cardiac events during long-distance races: updates from the prospective RACE PARIS registry with a systematic review and meta-analysis

Benoit Gerardin et al.

Summary: Limited data exist regarding life-threatening events such as major cardiac events or exertional heat stroke during long-distance races. A prospective study in the Paris area between 2006 and 2016 showed a low incidence of these events, with main etiologies being myocardial ischaemia and high pollution index being a risk factor. Further research is needed to provide better information for runners in order to reduce the incidence of these rare but serious events.

Sex Differences in Right Ventricular Dysfunction: Insights From the Bench to Bedside

Jennifer Keen et al.

Summary: There are inherent differences in right ventricular (RV) performance between males and females, with females generally showing better RV function. These differences have important prognostic implications in diseases like pulmonary hypertension (PH) and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D), where RV dysfunction leads to poor patient outcomes. Current therapies lack specificity in targeting failing RV, highlighting the need for novel approaches to combat RV dysfunction in these diseases.

Sex-Related Differences in Cardiac Channelopathies Implications for Clinical Practice

Babken Asatryan et al.

Summary: Sex-related differences in cardiac channelopathies are increasingly recognized, with varying risks and clinical features between men and women in different conditions, mainly influenced by age and sex hormones. While sex-specific predictors have been identified, gaps in the mechanistic understanding of these differences remain, highlighting the need for further research to address these disparities and improve patient outcomes.

Nationwide burden of sudden cardiac death: A study of 54,028 deaths in Denmark

Thomas Hadberg Lynge et al.

Summary: The study estimated the burden of SCD across all age groups in Denmark in 2010 and found that the incidence rate of SCD was similar to or greater than estimates of other common causes of death. Nearly half of all SCD cases occurred in persons without a history of cardiovascular disease, emphasizing the importance of risk stratification and prevention of SCD in the general population.
