Depressive symptoms in patients with epilepsy and clinically associated features in a single tertiary center

Mariacarolina Vacca et al.

Summary: Despite being the most common psychiatric comorbidity in epilepsy, depressive symptoms are often underestimated and untreated in a large proportion of patients. This study using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) found that women reported higher depression severity than men, with common symptoms including disturbances in sleeping patterns, tiredness, and loss of energy. The regression analysis indicated that being female, having an epilepsy duration < 10 years, being treated with psychotropic drugs, and reporting generalized seizures were associated with higher depression severity.

Banchlay Addis et al.

Summary: The prevalence of depression among epileptic patients is high, with perceived stigma, educational status, residence, frequency of seizure, and social support being significantly associated with depression status. Health care workers should focus more on patients with perceived stigma, higher seizure frequency, and poor social support.

Epilepsy Associated Depression: An Update on Current Scenario, Suggested Mechanisms, and Opportunities

Tanveer Singh et al.

Summary: Depression is a common psychiatric comorbidity associated with epilepsy, impacting the patient's quality of life. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are considered first-line antidepressants for people with epilepsy, although there is a lack of high-quality evidence to support this.
