Long non-coding RNA MEG3 promotes autophagy and apoptosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells via PTEN up-regulation by binding to microRNA-21

Liqiang Lin et al.

Summary: The study shows that MEG3 promotes autophagy and apoptosis in NPC cells by binding to miR-21, leading to enhanced PTEN expression. Overexpression of MEG3 in HK-1 cells can inhibit tumour formation.

Concomitant inhibition of hedgehog signalling and activation of retinoid receptors abolishes bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis

Ahmed Fawzy Eleraky et al.

Summary: The study found the interplay between retinoid receptors modulation and hedgehog signaling pathway in the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, with promising effects of Forskolin and All-trans retinoic acid in alleviating bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis. The combination of both drugs showed a synergistic reversal of the fibrotic effect and improvement in lung functions, indicating a potential therapeutic value for managing lung fibrosis.

Na Jiang et al.

Summary: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides that regulate gene expressions at various levels. Studies have shown that lncRNAs are closely related to programmed cell death (PCD) and play important roles in various cancers.

Silica dust exposure induces pulmonary fibrosis through autophagy signaling

Ning Li et al.

Summary: Silicosis is a well-recognized occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of free silica dust, leading to a negative impact on patients' quality of life. Autophagy plays a critical role in the development of pulmonary fibrosis and may affect fibrosis progression through regulating inflammatory response. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that autophagy signaling pathway, especially PI3K/Akt/mTOR, is involved in the pathogenesis of silicosis-induced pulmonary fibrosis, and NAC could alleviate inflammatory response through a non PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.

LncRNA MEG3 Involved in NiO NPs-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis via Regulating TGF-β1-Mediated PI3K/AKT Pathway

Haibing Zhan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that NiO NPs induced pulmonary fibrosis in rats and collagen deposition in human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells. NiO NPs could down-regulate MEG3, up-regulate TGF-β1, and activate PI3K/AKT pathway. Furthermore, overexpressed MEG3 inhibited TGF-β1-mediated PI3K/AKT pathway, thus reducing collagen formation.
