Multipurpose Benefits of an Underexplored Species Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.): A Critical Review

Rajani Srivastava et al.

Summary: Sustainable food production through integrating knowledge of indigenous and local communities is important for meeting the UN-SDGs. Purslane, a highly nutritious plant with medicinal and phytoremediation properties, shows potential for dietary diversification and climate resilience. It is rich in minerals, vitamins, and proteins and can be easily grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Purslane can be a valuable resource for resource-poor farmers in developing regions and contribute to agro-biodiversity for sustainable development.

Coupling Plant Biomass Derived from Phytoremediation of Potential Toxic-Metal-Polluted Soils to Bioenergy Production and High-Value by-Products-A Review

Vazquez-Nunez Edgar et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation is an effective strategy for cleaning soils contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants, with a focus on heavy metals. Studies show that phytoremediation not only removes pollutants, but also generates biofuels and other bioproducts, improving soil quality and functionality.

An integrated morpho-molecular study of Salicornia (Amaranthaceae-Chenopodiaceae) in Iran proves Irano-Turanian region the major center of diversity of annual glasswort species

Targol Chatrenoor et al.

Summary: This study on Salicornia in Iran confirmed the efficiency of plastid sequences in clarifying the phylogeny of Salicornia at the species level, identified a unique S. persica clade in the Irano-Turanian region, recognized nine origins of Irano-Turanian Salicornia based on nuclear ETS sequences, validated the monophyly of tetraploid species using plastid sequences, and provided a synopsis and diagnostic key for 10 Iranian taxa of Salicornia.

Application of Unmodified Brachystegia spiciformis Leaf Biomass in the Adsorption of Nitrate Ions

Kimberley Ruwaya et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the use of Brachystegia spiciformis leaf powder as an effective adsorbent for removing nitrate ions from water, achieving high removal rates from both dam water and industrial effluent. The experimental data fit well with the Langmuir model, indicating favorable interactions between nitrate ions and the adsorbent. The pseudo first order model provided the best fit to the kinetics data, with a rate constant of (7.3 +/- 0.1) x 10(-2) min(-1).
