Waterborne exposure of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) to polymethylmethacrylate nanoplastics causes effects at cellular and molecular levels

I. Brandts et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term exposure of 45 nm PMMANPs on gilthead seabream by analyzing biomarkers in liver and plasma. The results showed an up-regulation of genes associated with lipid metabolism, an increase in cholesterol and triglycerides in plasma, and activation of antioxidant defenses. After 96 hours, the antioxidant capacity decreased and genotoxicity in blood cells was observed.

Effects of microplastic exposure on the blood biochemical parameters in the pond turtle (Emys orbicularis)

Mahdi Banaee et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in blood biochemical parameters of European pond turtles exposed to 500 and 1000 mg/kg MPs, indicating potential adverse health effects of MPs on the turtles. This suggests that alterations in blood biochemical parameters could serve as a suitable bio-indicator for assessing tissue damage in pond turtles.
