Trends in the impact of socioeconomic developments on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in Dianchi Lake

Xiaohua Ma et al.

Summary: The correlation between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and economic parameters in Dianchi Lake, Yunnan province, China, was analyzed, showing significant impact of total population, GDP, energy consumption, etc. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to predict the trend in PAH concentrations in the sediments over the next 10 years. Results indicate the importance of economic and climate factors in increasing pollution levels.

Octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow) dependent movement and time lagging of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from emission sources to lake sediments: A case study of Taihu Lake, China

Weiwei Wang et al.

Summary: The movement and time lag of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Taihu Lake sediments from emission sources are dependent on their logK(ow) values, with low logK(ow) PAHs showing no lag and high logK(ow) PAHs demonstrating longer lag times due to retardation in soils and river sediments. PAHs concentration in sediments is influenced by their environmental behaviors, including sorption and degradation, indicating the importance of understanding PAHs behavior in controlling pollution.

Summary: This study analyzed the influencing factors and sources of historical changes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediment core of Fuxian Lake. Different sources and factors have varying impacts on PAHs before 1970, during 1971-2004, and 2005-2017.

Investigation on depth-dependent properties and benthic effluxes of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in pore water from plateau lake sediments

Shuaidong Li et al.

Summary: The study on dissolved organic matter (DOM) in plateau lake sediments revealed that DOM in pore water consisted mainly of two terrestrial humic-like components and microbial and tryptophan-like components. Terrestrial humic-like components were relatively stable, and the dynamics of DOM were closely related to the redox state and possibly influenced by microbial activities at different depths.Additionally, benthic flux estimations indicated that DOM and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in inland sediments were potential sources for overlying water and could impact the quality and ecological safety of lake water bodies.

Spatial distributions and sources of PAHs in soil in chemical industry parks in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Tianqi Jia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the profiles and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil samples collected from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and a typical chemical park in the YRD. Results showed that PAHs in YRD soil were mainly from coal combustion and vehicle emissions, while in RD, they were likely due to the volatilization and leakage of chemical raw materials. The study also suggested that industrial and traffic emissions were the main sources of PAHs in the soil, with negligible cancer risks to adults but higher risks to children.
