Sulfur-modified chabazite as a low-cost ion exchanger for the highly selective and simultaneous removal of cesium and strontium

Hee-Man Yang et al.

Summary: Sulfur-modified chabazite (CHA) with sulfur loading has the potential for cost-effective simultaneous removal of Cs+ and Sr2+. The Cs+ selectivity increases with sulfur loading while Sr2+ selectivity decreases. In contaminated water, 5S-CHA shows excellent removal performance for Cs-137 and Sr-90.

Effect of Si/Al molar ratio on the immobilization of selenium and arsenic oxyanions in geopolymer

Quanzhi Tian et al.

Summary: The Si/Al molar ratio of geopolymer has an impact on the immobilization of Se and As oxyanions, with Al tetrahedrons playing a key role in the geopolymer structure. The addition of pollutants affects the compactness and leaching performance of geopolymer. The compressive strength of geopolymer samples is always higher than 20 MPa, meeting the requirement for the safe disposal of hazardous waste.

Utilization of rice husk and waste aluminum cans for the synthesis of some nanosized zeolite, zeolite/zeolite, and geopolymer/zeolite products for the efficient removal of Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) ions from aqueous media

Ehab A. Abdelrahman et al.

Summary: In this study, rice husk and waste aluminum cans were utilized for the synthesis of nanosized zeolite and related products, which showed excellent performance in removing metal ions from water bodies. The adsorption of metal ions exhibited good adaptability and efficiency, fitting well with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-2nd-order kinetic model.

Effect of sodium silicate on the properties of loess stabilized with alkali-activated fly ash-based

Liuyang Gu et al.

Summary: Lower sodium silicate modulus and higher Baume degree lead to decreased optimal moisture content, increased maximum dry density, compressive strength, and cohesion of loess solidified by alkali-activated fly ash-based geopolymers. Additionally, these conditions result in weaker disintegration, lower natural water absorption, saturated water absorption, smaller average pore diameter, larger specific surface area of pores, and larger nanoscale pore volume in the geopolymer-solidified loess.

Facile Synthesis of Lanthanum Strontium Cobalt Ferrite (LSCF) Nanopowders Employing an Ion-Exchange Promoted Sol-Gel Process

Sri Rahayu et al.

Summary: Perovskite nanopowders of lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF) were successfully synthesized using the alginate mediated ion-exchange process, exhibiting high electrical conductivity, low polarizability, high catalytic activity, enhanced chemical stability, and high compatibility with ceria based solid electrolytes, making them promising cathode materials for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The optimal calcination temperature of 700 degrees C was determined for the synthesis of single phase nanopowders of LSCF, with the potential for scaling-up the manufacturing process indicated by TGA analysis showing a yield of 360 kg of LSCF nanopowders per ton of dried beads.

Relationship between zeolite structure and capture capability for radioactive cesium and strontium

Songhyeon Kwon et al.

Summary: Zeolites with high Si/Al ratios exhibit enhanced affinity to Cs+ ions, while zeolites containing 8-membered rings show extra-high selectivity for Cs+. In contrast, the affinity of Sr2+ ions to zeolites decreases as the Si/Al ratio increases, and Sr2+ exchange is less dependent on zeolite structures due to strong hydration. The kinetics of Sr2+ exchange is slower than that of Cs+ exchange due to the bulkiness of hydrated Sr2+ ions, with larger micropore channels beneficial for faster exchange kinetics.

M. Sivasakthi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of silica modulus on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of fly ash geopolymer. The compressive strength of geopolymers increased with higher silica modulus, but flash setting occurred at a specific modulus. The structural changes were confirmed through advanced spectroscopic techniques.
