An in vitro model for assessing the toxicity of pesticides in beeswax on honey bee larvae

Christina Kast et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the toxicity of coumaphos to worker bee larvae in beeswax and found that concentrations of coumaphos below 20 mg/kg were non-lethal to the larvae.

Long-term monitoring of lipophilic acaricide residues in commercial Swiss beeswax

Christina Kast et al.

Summary: A national survey in Switzerland over the past three decades revealed that certain veterinary drugs used in beekeeping led to persistent residues in beeswax, even after these products had been discontinued. Recent analyses show lower residue levels in Swiss beeswax compared to previous years, as beekeepers now mainly use hydrophilic substances that do not accumulate in beeswax. This reduces the exposure of honey bees to lipophilic contaminants.

The Effects of Exposure to Flupyradifurone on Survival, Development, and Foraging Activity of Honey Bees (Apis mellifera L.) under Field Conditions

Yi Guo et al.

Summary: Flupyradifurone (FPF) is a new butenolide insecticide considered bee-friendly, but laboratory experiments have shown negative effects on individual honey bee behavior. Our study found a significant decrease in survival rate of bees exposed to FPF, along with upregulation of immune- and detoxification-related genes in exposed foragers and newly emerged bees, suggesting potential risks to colony fitness. Further research on synergistic and behavioral effects of FPF on honey bees is recommended.

Honey bee exposure scenarios to selected residues through contaminated beeswax

Olivier Wilmart et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the risk to honey bee health posed by residues of pesticides and veterinary drugs in beeswax in Europe. Provisional action limits were proposed, and beeswax exceeding these limits should not be put on the market.
