Toxic cyanobacteria and microcystin dynamics in a tropical reservoir: assessing the influence of environmental variables

Thanh-Luu Pham et al.

Summary: Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are a global concern, and this study focused on the dynamics of toxic cyanobacteria and microcystin concentrations in the Tri An Reservoir in Vietnam. Results showed that Microcystis was the dominant group and primary microcystin producer, with environmental factors such as nutrient loading and suspended solids influencing blooms and toxic genotype prevalence.

A comparative assessment of growth, pigment and enhanced lipid production by two toxic freshwater cyanobacteria Anabaena circinalis FSS 124 and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii FSS 127 under various combinations of nitrogen and phosphorous inputs

Aratrika Sarkar et al.

Summary: Nitrogen and phosphorous are crucial nutrients for the growth of cyanobacteria, affecting bloom formation by toxic species. Manipulating these nutrients can enhance lipid production in cyanobacteria. This study compared growth, pigment, and lipid production in two toxic strains and found differences in response to different nutrient combinations.

Abiotic factors driving cyanobacterial biomass and composition under perennial bloom conditions in tropical latitudes

Rayane F. Vanderley et al.

Summary: The study in six shallow, man-made lakes in the semi-arid Northeastern region of Brazil found that decreased water levels led to increased phosphorous and nitrogen concentrations, resulting in higher phytoplankton biomass. Cyanobacterial biomass was correlated with phosphorus concentrations during year-round blooms and the dominance of the two main bloom-forming genera, Raphidiopsis and Microcystis, was influenced by water transparency.

Water quality assessment using Sentinel-2 imagery with estimates of chlorophyll a, Secchi disk depth, and Cyanobacteria cell number: the Cantareira System reservoirs (Sao Paulo, Brazil)

Marcelo Pompeo et al.

Summary: Satellite images were used to assess water quality in six reservoirs of the Cantareira System in Sao Paulo State, where a clear pattern of eutrophication was revealed, especially in upstream reservoirs. The robustness of estimates for chlorophyll a concentration and light penetration using satellite images was demonstrated, with a strong relationship between Cyanobacteria cells and chlorophyll a.

Influence of Environmental Factors on Occurrence of Cyanobacteria and Abundance of Saxitoxin-Producing Cyanobacteria in a Subtropical Drinking Water Reservoir in Brazil

Munique A. B. Moraes et al.

Summary: A quantitative PCR assay was developed for the detection of potential STX-producing cyanobacteria in Brazilian water reservoirs. The study found that regulation of SXT production was impacted by environmental variables, while the occurrence of microcystin was not correlated with any environmental variables. The developed qPCR assay provides a rapid and robust approach for specific quantification of potential toxin-producing cyanobacteria.

The combined effect of clethodim (herbicide) and nitrogen variation on allelopathic interactions between Microcystis aeruginosa and Raphidiopsis raciborskii

Fernanda Breda-Alves et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of herbicide and nitrogen on allelopathic interactions and toxin production of Microcystis aeruginosa and Raphidiopsis raciborskii. The results showed that nitrogen enrichment and the presence of herbicide may lead to excessive proliferation of these algae species and increased production of cyanotoxins in aquatic environments.
