Spatial Trends of Anionic, Zwitterionic, and Cationic PFASs at an AFFF-Impacted Site

Anastasia Nickerson et al.

Summary: This study sampled and analyzed soil and groundwater from an AFFF-impacted site, finding that PFAS concentrations were generally higher at depth than near the surface. In FTA soil, zwitterionic and cationic compounds were the major components of total PFAS mass. The composition of PFAS class, chain length, and structural isomers changed with depth and distance from the FTA, suggesting in situ transformation and differential transport.

Stability of Nitrogen-Containing Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Aerobic Soils

Min Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation potential of four electrochemical fluorination (ECF)-based PFAS zwitterions in aerobic soils for the first time, revealing that structural differences, especially nitrogen head groups, significantly influenced the persistence of these compounds. Compounds containing quaternary ammonium or betaine groups showed high stability in soils, with DT50 likely to be years or decades, while those with tertiary amine or amine oxide groups showed shorter DT50 of weeks or months. These findings provide insights into the degradation pathways and persistence of perfluoroalkyl cations and zwitterions from AFFFs in surface soils.

Multidimensional simulation of PFAS transport and leaching in the vadose zone: Impact of surfactant-induced flow and subsurface heterogeneities

Jicai Zeng et al.

Summary: PFAS fate and transport in the environment are not well understood, with recent modeling studies suggesting long-chain PFAS remain in the shallow vadose zone. Heterogeneities in the subsurface can lead to accelerated leaching of PFAS, especially in preferential flow pathways. Surfactant-induced flow has minimal impact on long-term PFAS leaching in the vadose zone.
