Perfluorooctane sulfonate removal by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): Insights into the effect and mechanism of metal nodes and organic ligands

Changwei Zhao et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal nodes and organic ligands were prepared and used to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from water. Among them, MIL-53(Al) showed the best PFOS adsorption performance due to its highest unsaturated metal active sites and smallest pore size, while longer organic ligands were found to contribute to better PFOS entry and performance. The presence of Fe3+ ions in MOFs/PFOS system improved PFOS removal through bridging and interaction, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. These optimized MOFs are promising adsorbents for sustainable removal of PFOS from water.

Efficient Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Water with Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Rui Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the zirconium-based metal-organic framework NU-1000 shows exceptional adsorption capacities and ultrafast adsorption kinetics for PFASs, with equilibrium times of less than 1 minute. NU-1000 also exhibits excellent regeneration and reusability characteristics, with nearly quantitative removal and recovery rates after five consecutive adsorption and desorption cycles of PFAS. Adsorption testing using PFAS-contaminated groundwater samples shows impressive PFAS removal rates of 75-98% within 10 minutes, regardless of the presence of co-contaminants.

Metal-organic frameworks for environmental applications

Yinghao Wen et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising photocatalysts for degrading organic pollutants due to their unique structure, which includes redox-sensitive metals and light-harvesting organic linkers. However, their widespread adoption in environmental cleanup faces technical challenges that need to be addressed for enhanced environmental stability and photocatalytic activity. The scientific community must further explore key challenges to advance the applications of MOFs in environmental settings.
