A Critical Review of Membrane Wettability in Membrane Distillation from the Perspective of Interfacial Interactions

Haiqing Chang et al.

Summary: This Critical Review provides a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing membrane wetting in membrane distillation systems, with a focus on the interfacial interaction between the membrane and solutes in the feed solution. It discusses the fundamental theory of surface wetting, membrane wetting mechanisms, influence of membrane properties and operating conditions, as well as potential strategies to prevent membrane wetting and improve the efficiency of MD systems.

Nanofiltration-Inspired Janus Membranes with Simultaneous Wetting and Fouling Resistance for Membrane Distillation

Yuanmiaoliang Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a highly effective method to mitigate wetting and fouling in membrane distillation (MD) applications by designing a novel nanofiltration (NF)-inspired Janus membrane (PVDF-P-CQD). The membrane, consisting of a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layer and a hydrophilic polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) layer grafted with sodium-functionalized carbon quantum dots (Na+-CQDs), showed excellent resistance towards surfactant-induced wetting and oil-induced fouling.

Wetting, Scaling, and Fouling in Membrane Distillation: State-of-the-Art Insights on Fundamental Mechanisms and Mitigation Strategies

Thomas Horseman et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation (MD) technology has attracted increasing attention as a promising method for desalination, but faces technical challenges such as pore wetting, mineral scaling, and membrane fouling. Understanding and addressing each membrane failure mechanism can guide the development of operational and material strategies to overcome these challenges.
