Intrinsic enzyme-like activity of magnetite particles is enhanced by cultivation with Trichoderma guizhouense

Zhi-Lai Chi et al.

Summary: Fungal-mineral interactions can produce biogenic nano-size minerals with high peroxidase-like activity. Analysis revealed that the unique properties of magnetite nanoparticles mainly come from surface non-lattice oxygen, challenging traditional Fenton reaction theories. Additionally, nanoSIMS and synchrotron-based micro-FTIR spectra demonstrated the presence of oxygen film and groups on fungal hyphae surfaces.

Molybdenum Bioavailability and Asymbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Soils are Raised by Iron (Oxyhydr)oxide-Mediated Free Radical Production

Guang-Hui Yu et al.

Summary: Long-term manure fertilization increases microbial diversity and content of iron (oxyhydr)oxides in soils, leading to higher Mo bioavailability and storage, as well as increased abundance of nifH genes and nitrogenase activity. This intensifies asymbiotic N fixation and provides a strategy for enhancing biological N fixation in agricultural ecosystems.

Fungal behaviour: a new frontier in behavioural ecology

Kristin Aleklett et al.

Summary: Behaviors are integral to the daily lives of human beings, vertebrates, and to some extent, invertebrates, and can be studied through the concepts of behavioral ecology. Despite the minimal commonalities between humans and fungi, fungi also exhibit behaviors that can be better understood through the lens of behavioral ecology. Insights from fungal behavior may contribute to a broader understanding of behavioral ecology as a whole.

Dynamic interactions at the mineral-organic matter interface

Markus Kleber et al.

Summary: Minerals and organic matter interact in soils and sediments, affecting biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem functioning. Minerals are assumed to protect organic matter from degradation and promote the persistence of carbon. Various mechanisms such as adsorption, catalysis, and oxidation are involved in mineral-organic interactions, highlighting the complexity of these processes in environments.
