Hyperthermophilic pretreatment composting to produce high quality sludge compost with superior humification degree and nitrogen retention

Yanfei Tang et al.

Summary: Hyperthermophilic pretreatment composting showed higher efficiency in sludge degradation and phytotoxicity removal, leading to enhanced humification and organic nitrogen retention. The pretreatment promoted protein transformation and humic acid polymerization, with the mechanism involving the stimulation of essential precursors formation and bacterial community evolution.

Insights into thermal hydrolyzed sludge liquor - Identification of plant-growth-promoting compounds

Dan Lu et al.

Summary: This study identified high value chemical compounds in the liquid fraction of thermal hydrolyzed sludge (TH sludge) that can promote plant growth, indicating the feasibility of using TH liquor as organic fertilizer. The phytohormone compound indole-3-acetic acid was observed for the first time in TH liquor, which had a stimulating effect on plant growth without impacting soil microbes negatively. The holistic approach of using TH liquor as organic fertilizer and producing biochar could lead to nearly zero-waste discharge in sludge management.

Semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of secondary sludge with free ammonia pretreatment: Focusing on volatile solids destruction, dewaterability, pathogen removal and its implications

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that pretreatment of secondary sludge with free ammonia enhanced volatile solids destruction and methane production in semi-continuous anaerobic digestion systems. The FA pretreatment also improved sludge dewaterability and pathogen removal efficiency, while reducing the volume of dewatered sludge and overall cost. These findings suggest a promising strategy to enhance sludge reduction in anaerobic digestion processes.
