Online Counter Gradient LC-FT-ICR-MS Enables Detection of Highly Polar Natural Organic Matter Fractions

Limei Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated natural organic matter (NOM) using ESIFT-ICR combined with LC, and applied a counter gradient technique to stabilize solvent conditions. The results showed that the counter gradient method increased TIC intensity and the number of assigned molecular formulas, and revealed more molecular formulas in the CHNO, CHOS, CHNOS formula classes.

Changes in dissolved organic matter during water treatment by sequential solid-phase extraction and unknown screening analysis

Phanwatt Phungsai et al.

Summary: Isolating complex dissolved organic matter from environmental water for unknown screening analysis is a major challenge. This study fractionated DOM in process water using three solid-phase extraction cartridges based on molecule polarity and charge. The results showed that different fractions of DOM had distinct molecular characteristics and varied responses to oxidation treatment.

Monitoring dissolved organic matter in wastewater and drinking water treatments using spectroscopic analysis and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry

Weixin Shi et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is essential in determining water quality, with monitoring techniques like absorption spectroscopy and FT-ICR-MS providing insights into DOM composition. The complexity and diversity of DOM pose challenges in water treatment, highlighting the importance of understanding DOM composition for optimizing treatment processes.

Unveiling the transformation of dissolved organic matter during ozonation of municipal secondary effluent based on FT-ICR-MS and spectral analysis

Bingliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) during ozonation of real effluents using advanced spectroscopic techniques. Results showed that as ozone dosage increased, the relative abundance of O8-19 species gradually increased in the ozonated samples, while an opposite trend was observed for O5-7S1 species. The study also identified key reactions and compounds involved in the ozonation process, shedding light on the potential for improving water reclamation through ozonation.

Ozonation products from trace organic chemicals in municipal wastewater and from metformin: peering through the keyhole with supercritical fluid chromatography-mass spectrometry

Bettina Seiwert et al.

Summary: The study utilized SFC-HRMS compared to RPLC-HRMS to identify new products in ozonated wastewater treatment, demonstrating the advantages of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for highly polar analytes. Results showed that a combination of sand/anthracite and fresh post-granular activated carbon was most effective in removing products, but several persistent products were still observed.

Filling the knowledge gap: A suspect screening study for 1310 potentially persistent and mobile chemicals with SFC- and HILIC-HRMS in two German river systems

Isabelle Neuwald et al.

Summary: HILIC and SFC coupled to HRMS were used to search for PM chemicals in surface waters, identifying 64 compounds with high polarity and low molecular weight. The discovery of novel water contaminants suggests that the universe of PM chemicals in the environment has been scarcely explored.

Compositional characteristics of dissolved organic matter in pharmaceutical wastewater effluent during ozonation

Yufei Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that ozone treatment in pharmaceutical wastewater is effective in attacking high molecular weight DOM, improving biodegradability. Hydrophobic acids contain the most aromatic and unsaturated bonded organic matter and are more easily oxidized under ozone treatment.
