Tree-Ring Reconstruction of the Atmospheric Ridging Feature That Causes Flash Drought in the Central United States Since 1500

Kasey C. Bolles et al.

Summary: The new tree-ring reconstructions reveal that the central United States has experienced a significant number of flash drought events over the past five centuries, with about 17% of years under flash drought conditions and 4% of years experiencing extremely severe flash drought. However, over one-third of the inferred exceptional flash droughts have occurred since the 20th century.

Tree Rings and Observations Suggest No Stable Cycles in Sierra Nevada Cool-Season Precipitation

A. P. Williams et al.

Summary: California’s water resources heavily rely on cool-season precipitation in the Sierra Nevada; long-term significant cyclicity in cool-season precipitation indicates potential as seasonal forecasting tools; research suggests that interannual variability of Sierra Nevada cool-season precipitation is not a purely white noise process and aims to diagnose the dynamical drivers of extended periods of cyclicity.

Soil moisture-atmosphere feedbacks mitigate declining water availability in drylands

Sha Zhou et al.

Summary: Soil moisture strongly influences future changes in precipitation minus evapotranspiration, particularly in drylands. A negative feedback from soil moisture can offset a significant portion of the expected decline in dryland precipitation minus evapotranspiration, mainly by regulating evapotranspiration and atmospheric moisture transport.

ENSO-driven coupled megadroughts in North and South America over the last millennium

Nathan J. Steiger et al.

Summary: The study shows that there were numerous megadroughts in the South American Southwest over the last millennium, driven by ENSO. Additionally, North American Southwest and South American Southwest megadroughts have occurred simultaneously more often than expected by chance, primarily due to an increased frequency of cold ENSO states. This poses a substantial risk for ENSO-driven, coupled megadroughts in two critical agricultural regions.
