Polluted paradise: Occurrence of pesticide residues within the urban coastal zones of Santa Cruz and Isabela (Galapagos, Ecuador)

Lenin Riascos-Flores et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of multiple pesticide residues in the coastal waters of urban areas in the Galapagos Islands, with Santa Cruz island having higher diversity and concentration compared to Isabela island. Repetitions in sampling locations showed significant spatial and temporal variations in pesticide residue concentrations. Evaluation indicated relatively high risk posed by certain pesticides to specific biotic groups.

Trace Element Contamination in One of the Yangtze Tributaries (Hunan, China)-Source Review and Potential Release from Sediments

Cecile Grosbois et al.

Summary: The study found that Cd, Sb, and Hg were the most heavily contaminated trace elements in the sediments of the Xiangjiang River, primarily concentrated in the upstream area. Experimental results showed that the fate of these trace elements mostly depends on stability under specific physicochemical and microbial conditions.

Spatio-temporal variability of Brachyura larval assemblages in mangroves of the Gulf of Guayaquil's inner estuary

Jose Ponton-Cevallos et al.

Summary: Mangroves are the dominant coastal vegetation in tropical estuaries, hosting a large diversity of brachyuran crabs. Crab larvae in estuaries have adapted to dynamic hydrological conditions using various strategies, and changes in their assemblages can be monitored to detect ecological changes. This study sampled crab larval assemblages in two sub-estuaries of the Gulf of Guayaquil, finding differences between the sub-estuaries and seasonal patterns within each of them.

Pesticides contamination in the Thamirabarani, a perennial river in peninsular India: The first report on ecotoxicological and human health risk assessment

Ulaganathan Arisekar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the distribution of pesticides and assesses the associated ecological and human health risks in the Thamirabarani River in Tamil Nadu, India. Results indicate that while pesticides in the water and sediments pose no ecological hazard to aquatic organisms, human exposure through ingestion and dermal contact may increase cancer risks.

An international probabilistic risk assessment of acute dietary exposure to pesticide residues in relation to codex maximum residue limits for pesticides in food

Amelie Crepet et al.

Summary: The World Health Organization conducted a probabilistic dietary exposure assessment to evaluate actual acute dietary exposure to 38 pesticides in eight countries, finding no appreciable risk for all countries and populations considered. Most of the Codex maximum residue limits would provide a high level of protection even without a specific request from risk managers.

Can mangroves work as an effective phytoremediation tool for pesticide contamination? An interlinked analysis between surface water, sediments and biota

Lucia Ivorra et al.

Summary: The research investigated the potential benefits of mangrove ecosystems as OCP phytoremediators. The findings showed a common trend of less pesticide pollution in mangrove areas across different matrices. In addition, the study discussed average concentrations in relation to International Directives and included theoretical risk assessments.

Long-term effects of a catastrophic insecticide spill on stream invertebrates

Lena Reiber et al.

Summary: Accidental spills or illegal discharges of pesticides in aquatic ecosystems can lead to exposure levels that strongly exceed authorized pesticide concentrations, causing major impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Regular ecological monitoring is imperative to identify such ecosystem impairments in a timely manner and should be combined with analytical chemistry methods to identify the potential sources of spills.

Pesticides are the dominant stressors for vulnerable insects in lowland streams

Matthias Liess et al.

Summary: Agricultural nonpointsource pesticide pollution is a major driver in reducing vulnerable insect populations in aquatic invertebrate communities, exceeding the relevance of other anthropogenic stressors. The current authorization of pesticides underestimates the actual ecological risk and needs to include monitoring-derived information on pesticide effects at the ecosystem level for adequate environmental quality objectives.

Pesticide mixture toxicity to algae in agricultural streams ? Field observations and laboratory studies with in situ samples and reconstituted water

Jenny Rydh Stenstrom et al.

Summary: Long-term monitoring in agricultural streams revealed the presence of multiple pesticides, with some dominating pesticides contributing significantly to the mixture's toxicity towards algae. Inhibition tests with in situ stream water showed frequent inhibitory effects despite low ETU levels, with confounding factors affecting results. Spiked reconstituted water tests demonstrated significant inhibitory effects, surpassing levels observed in field samples, suggesting that pesticide contamination in agricultural streams may impact algae populations.
