Impact of natural disasters on the efficiency of agricultural production: an exemplar from rice farming in Sri Lanka

Summary: This study investigates the impact of natural disasters on rice production efficiency in Sri Lanka, showing that drought and flood have significant negative effects on technical efficiency, with drought being the most severe. The disasters have decreased rice production efficiency by 2-5% on average. Therefore, there is a need to change policies and resource allocation based on traditional knowledge to address the greater challenges posed by climate change.

Summary: The study assessed soil erosion in Uva province, Sri Lanka, and generated a soil erosion hazard zonation map. Findings showed that the average soil erosion rate in the province was 25.6 t ha(-1) year(-1) and majority of the land fell into the low soil erosion hazard category.
