Competitive Exclusion and Metabolic Dependency among Microorganisms Structure the Cellulose Economy of an Agricultural Soil

Roland C. Wilhelm et al.

Summary: Our study investigates the ecological and physiological traits of microorganisms involved in the cellulose economy of soil, revealing differing degrees of metabolic dependency and competitive exclusion among cellulolytic and noncellulolytic taxa. These trade-offs between independent primary degraders and interdependent/secondary degraders are crucial in shaping the fate of microbially processed carbon in soil, providing valuable insights into the ecological relationships governing this key carbon cycle in the environment. Additionally, our novel gradient-resolved approach for stable isotope probing offers a genome-centric perspective into soil microbial processes, contributing to a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating the decomposition of organic matter in soil ecosystems.

Reaching out in anticipation: bacterial membrane extensions represent a permanent investment in polysaccharide sensing and utilization

Alexandra Duerwald et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Pseudoalteromonas distincta ANT/505 produces outer membrane vesicles and vesicle chains on different carbon sources, equipped with highly substrate-specific proteins to facilitate rapid sensing and response in nutritionally deprived environments. This adaptation may also help in efficient carbohydrate processing and reduce loss of substrates and enzymes in the aquatic ecosystem.

Phenolic acid-degrading Paraburkholderia prime decomposition in forest soil

Roland C. C. Wilhelm et al.

Summary: The study found that stimulating phenolic-acid degrading bacteria can enhance the decomposition of soil organic carbon. It was highlighted that Paraburkholderia is the main degrader of pHB, and its activity, associated with differences among tree species, is a potential mechanism in SOC cycling in forests.
