Color-tuning of natural variants of heliorhodopsin

Se-Hwan Kim et al.

Summary: Microbial rhodopsins, including the newly discovered heliorhodopsins, have similar structural features but different spectral characteristics. By studying and mutating various heliorhodopsins, researchers identified key residues that influence spectral changes. Homology modeling was used to predict the 3D structure of Thermoplasmatales heliorhodopsin, and the color-tuning mechanism of type-I rhodopsin was found to be applicable to understanding heliorhodopsin color-tuning.

Microbial Rhodopsins: The Last Two Decades

Andrey Rozenberg et al.

Summary: Microbial rhodopsins are a diverse group of photoreceptive proteins that are present in all domains of cellular life and even encoded in viral genomes. They are classified into two families: type 1 rhodopsins and heliorhodopsins, both having seven transmembrane helices with similar structures but opposite membrane orientation. These rhodopsins are involved in a variety of light-driven energy and sensory transduction processes.

Vibrational modes of water predict spectral niches for photosynthesis in lakes and oceans

Tadzio Holtrop et al.

Summary: By using a radiative transfer model, the authors identified five spectral niches in aquatic ecosystems based on the vibrational modes of water molecules. These niches, in the violet, blue, green, orange, and red parts of the spectrum, are effectively captured by chlorophylls and phycobilin pigments of cyanobacteria and their eukaryotic descendants. The global distributions of these spectral niches were predicted using remote sensing and validated with observed large-scale distribution patterns of cyanobacterial pigment types, providing an explanation for the biogeographical distributions of photosynthetic pigments across lakes and oceans.
