clinker & clustermap.js: automatic generation of gene cluster comparison figures

Cameron L. M. Gilchrist et al.

Summary: Genes involved in biological pathways are often found in gene clusters, and comparing these clusters can provide valuable insights into their function and evolutionary history. To simplify the tedious process of comparing and visualizing gene cluster similarity, a Python tool called clinker and a companion JavaScript library called clustermap.js have been developed to automatically generate accurate, interactive, publication-quality gene cluster comparison figures from sequence files.

A framework for identifying the recent origins of mobile antibiotic resistance genes

Stefan Ebmeyer et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic resistance genes is influenced by mobile resistance genes acquired through horizontal gene transfer. Majority of the resistance genes originated from taxa associated with infection in humans and domestic animals, likely due to antibiotic selection pressure.

Metallo-β-lactamases in the Age of Multidrug Resistance: From Structure and Mechanism to Evolution, Dissemination, and Inhibitor Design

Guillermo Bahr et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a major problem in current practical medicine, with the spread of genes coding for resistance determinants among bacteria challenging the use of antibiotics. Metallo-beta-lactamases play a central role in antibiotic resistance, with their diverse characteristics explored in the chemical, biochemical, and microbiological aspects.

2-Mercaptomethyl-thiazolidines use conserved aromatic-S interactions to achieve broad-range inhibition of metallo-β-lactamases

Maria-Agustina Rossi et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel MBL inhibitor, MMTZs, which competitively inhibit the activity of B1 MBLs, prolonging the effective lifespan of carbapenems and restoring their bactericidal effects on multidrug resistant bacteria. The binding mode and mechanism of action of MMTZs differ from existing thiol-based MBL inhibitors, showing better inhibitory effects and simpler binding modes.
